Groundhog

Symbol of Groundhog Day

The groundhog (Marmota monax), also known as a woodchuck, whistle-pig, or in some areas as a land-beaver, is a rodent of the family Sciuridae, belonging to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots.

The groundhog is also the Symbol of the celebration of Groundhog Day. On Groundhog Day, according to folklore, the groundhog will emerge from its den and take a look around. If s/he sees their shadow, the there will be six more weeks of winter. On the other hand, if no shadow is seen, spring will come early.
