Helpful Tips:

When it comes to travel currency, the basic rule is Cover All Bases because sometimes overseas bank machine connections are not working, sometimes cash advances on credit cards can only be done at banks, and banks may be closed after hours or for holidays, sometimes travelers checks are refused for various reasons.

New Mexico Vacation

Need somewhere to go on vacation in the U.S.A.?

Try New Mexico.

North, south, east or west, it is the Land of Enchantment!

I have been to New Mexico so many times I think I could find my way around blindfolded. 🙂 Seriously, though, I love the State. It is truly the Land Of Enchantment. For more detailed information, links, and more pictures, please visit the New Mexico page.

So, let’s get started, shall we?

For a vacation in the southern end of the state, start with Carlsbad Caverns. The cave is amazing and large. Pack a sweater or other warm garment. The inside of the cave is around 56 degrees all year. The walk down is fantastic, but can be a bit tiring for some people. If you are not physically able to make the walk down, there are elevators available, which are also the only way out of the cave.  Be sure to stay around for the bat flight in the evening.

After that, move on to Cloudcroft, about 150 miles from Carlsbad Caverns, and on top of a mountain. Make that your base for the rest of your southern end vacation. From Cloudcroft you can visit Ruidoso Downs in Ruidoso (50 miles) for horse racing. The Space Museum, Alameda Park Zoo, and Toy Train Depot in Alamogordo (16 miles), and White Sands National Monument (40 miles). In Carrizozo, also close by (70 miles), is The Valley of the Fires lava flow with walking trails, Visitor Center and camping sites. Each could be made a day trip from Cloudcroft.

For a more Northern New Mexico vacation, try Starting with Santa Fe. Santa Fe is a magical, exuberant, colorful journey at any time of year. From there is it a short 61 miles to Albuquerque where you will find many places to explore year round. Or the yearly Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in the Fall. Take a 70 mile drive to Taos, where you will find lots to see and do, including skiing in the winter! If you like trains, it is 106 miles to Chama and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. You will love the train ride through the mountains between Chama New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado. I would recommend booking a room in Chama for that excursion. It is an all day trip.

If you travel by car (automobile), keep a look out for interesting attractions along the way. It seems there is always something to see in New Mexico! There are many Pueblos as well as Ghost Towns and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, just to name a few.

Whatever your means of getting there, New Mexico is sure to enchant you!
